Switching for 3L.

When is the appropriate time to start 3L job search if you already secured a 2L position? During 3L? Or do 2L OCI?

If you're looking at firm jobs, then start mass mailing as your 2L SA is winding down/just ended in late July/early August.

Isn't it best to wait until you have an offer to mass mail?

Anon from above. Yes and no. Every firm I interviewed with asked about my offer status before bringing me in for an interview, but I know of at least one other person who got an offer at a V20 before receiving an offer from their summer firm (because they give them out late). I personally waited until mid Septwmber to start applying and wish I hadn't. I still ended up with the V10 offer I wanted, but I think I missed out on some others by applying late and the timeline created issues with my summer firms offer deadline.

I'd recommend sending out apps as soon as you finish your summer provided you'll be hearing from your summer firm about offers in a reasonable timeframe (~2 weeks).

I sent out apps when I had my offer but think I'd have been better off mass mailing a little earlier. By the time you hear back from anyone you'll probably have the offer in hand, so send stuff out a couple weeks before that to get the process going.
