Bump. Anyone have a sense of the time line for the application process? How competitive it is?

Re: Oregon DOJ Honors Program
It's pretty competitive for in-state school students. Ties and prior experience there are pretty crucial. If you're a T14 student who is from the state, obviously grades are going to matter a lot less.

any chance for t14 out-of-staters w/o strong ties to the area? having a really hard time finding any info on the program outside what the DOJ offers on its own website

Pretty long odds without OR connections (this based on talking to 4 or 5 people who went through the program, YMMV).Anonymous User wrote:any chance for t14 out-of-staters w/o strong ties to the area? having a really hard time finding any info on the program outside what the DOJ offers on its own website

Re: Oregon DOJ Honors Program
I applied as an out-of-stater and was told over the phone that I didn't move forward because I didn't have any ties with the state. So I'd second the previous comments re ties being crucial. But hey, prove me wrong, I'd love for them to stop being so localist when there are so many talented students everywhere else who really would love to move to Oregon.

Re: Oregon DOJ Honors Program
Anon from above who knows folks who went through. One thing I'll add is that prior military experience can level the playing field bc this is state hiring. Know an out of stater who got a non-Honors job and says the points boost was a big help.

Can someone please explain why this is prestigious/sought after in the first place?

1. State AG's offices do legit work, it pays slightly more than CA AG, and it's government so the life is great.
2. Oregon seems like a pretty cool state to live in.
3. Not all state AG's do entry-level hiring through an honors program... that I know of.

Not prestigious as such, but great work life balance, substantive work/responsibility right away, and this is a legal market with so few biglaw jobs that it's an important fallback.

zot1, thanks for the info. do you happen to remember a rough timeline of when you heard back with the ding? juggling a few different honors programs and am trying to figure out if a possible offer from Oregon would come after i'd have to decide on a possible offer from another

Re: Oregon DOJ Honors Program
I don't recall being formally dinged. I think I waited about a month after I applied and then called the recruiter to inquire about the progress of my application. This is when she let me down "easy." I really cannot recall getting an actual letter, but it's possible it happened and since I already knew it was coming, I didn't commit it to memory.
For what is worth, I believe I applied just a few days shy of the deadline.

These are probably great jobs if you can get them but I get the impression that they do heavily favor in-state students, being mindful that there are 3 law schools in the state, it's a state institution, and jobs are hard enough to come by here.

I don't think this is true. You still get trumped by Portland kids at elite schools, and there are plenty of them.Anonymous User wrote:These are probably great jobs if you can get them but I get the impression that they do heavily favor in-state students, being mindful that there are 3 law schools in the state, it's a state institution, and jobs are hard enough to come by here.

I would call the contact. She always seemed happy to answer questions.

Nope. I wasn't considered because I didn't have ties to Oregon. But as an applicant, going through the process, the contact seemed happy to answer questions.

As someone who is likely applying to this program next fall, could y'all post some of your stats? I'm trying to get a gauge of what it takes to be competitive for the program.

I'm sorry, but I'm so sick of reading this line of reasoning on here. I have NEITHER and interviewed this cycle.zot1 wrote:Be from Oregon or have extensive ties.Anonymous User wrote:As someone who is likely applying to this program next fall, could y'all post some of your stats?
