Accepted an offer from my 2L summer firm. But recently received a callback from a firm that is much better in the practice area I want to be in. Also, I really don't like the people in the group at my current firm.
However, this would be in the same practice group (both NYC and both pay market). And I am afraid of the career repercussions down the road from reneging, should I actually get an offer.
Would really appreciate any advice, because I am very conflicted.

you should always do what is best for you and your career. nobody will ever hold making a professional decision against you for the most part. and if they do, it's probably people you don't want to work for.
go on the callback. if you get an offer and you are sure this is the firm for you, i don't see how anyone could say turning it down is the right move.

I wouldn't back out after accepting an offer, but I'm sure plenty of people would. The most I would consider doing is ask to split, and if they say no, tell them you have to withdraw, then at least it's sort of their fault.

I can't split, because the offer is to come back as a first year associate.jrf12886 wrote:I wouldn't back out after accepting an offer, but I'm sure plenty of people would. +1 You have nothing to lose by going on the callback, and a lot to gain.JohannDeMann wrote:you should always do what is best for you and your career. nobody will ever hold making a professional decision against you for the most part. and if they do, it's probably people you don't want to work for.

What are you going to do if they ask you if you have any other offers outstanding and the status on them? What if they, for some reason, ask if you've accepted an offer already?
Just saying be prepared to mince your words in case of those two questions.
