I have a well connected friend that is willing to place a call to a firm in waiting to hear back from after a callback.
If the person does so, and I get an offer, is it rude to turn them down if i get a better offer?

This is just my opinion but yes, it is. If it were just to get a screener, my opinion would be different. But if this person is putting a call in to secure you an offer, I do think it's rude to turn it down.

Rude to who? Your friend who put in the call? Sure, but that's between you and her/him. The firm? I think they'll get over it. The person who gets the spot that would've been yours? Nope.

Yes, rude to the friend that put in the call. They are using their reputation and connection to help you get an offer. This person might be a good enough friend where that's fine but if a friend of mine asked me to put a call in for them and then turned down the job, I'd be a little ticked at them. At minimum, I'd expect them to let me know upfront that they may not take the job.

The call is probably less useful than you think, and letting them do it could hurt your relationship with someone you might be glad to know later. I'd skip it.
