Suit Up for 2nd Look?

Post by acijku2 » Sun Aug 23, 2015 8:31 pm

Stupid question but can I go business casual for a 2nd looks or should I still be suiting up? It's hot and the subway sucks in a suit.

Just wear a damn suit. You're still an applicant for a job as a professional. Communicate that you take it seriously, even though you have the offer in hand.

There is no downside to wearing a suit. It will show that you are taking the interview seriously. Also, you'll be a bit fucked if you dress biz cas and your interviewers end up wearing suits.

Just carry your jacket and tie, then tie it in the restroom when you get there/in a Starbucks/Pret, etc.

Just ask recruiting? There are no tricks involved here. You have an offer, they are trying to convince you to join them now. I went with business casual to all of my second looks because that's what recruiting told me to do.

If "2nd look" is like a dinner with a few attys, I don't think you need to suit. If it's a trip to the office that resembles a callback, I probably would.

If they didn't say anything, I suited up. If recruiting specifically told me that there was no need to wear a suit, I wore a dress/blazer, or blouse/pencil skirt combination. Seemed to work fine. You already have an offer and as long as you don't dress too egregiously, nobody will rescind your offer or even remember what you were wearing when you come back in the summer.

I've been made fun of by attorneys for being overdressed at stuff like this, and I've been made fun of by attorneys for being underdressed at stuff like this. I would rather be made fun of for being overdressed.

I would do whatever recruiting tells you to do. Failing that, I would err on the side of being overdressed.

Going against the TLS received wisdom here, I'd say harmless to go with business casual at this point, speaking as an attorney you'd probably be meeting with at one of these. The only exception I'd make is if the firm is business formal attire generally (which I think is only Cravath and Jones Day among the large firms). Of course, be on the business side of business casual.

No one at a big firm will make fun of you for wearing a suit, though (unless it's Quinn).
