NY Biglaw Actual Pay
I know first year associates in NY make $160k + bonus, but I'm curious about what the actual take home amount is for people.
Things I'd like to know:
- Do you get paid weekly, bi-monthly, monthly, etc...
- What is your approximate net income
- Single/Married/Dependents
- How much do you spend in rent
Thanks in advance for the info!

Would also like to know. Also, how do bonuses work / how much are they typically for NY firms?

search "take home pay calculator" and plug in the state. ADP has one that I have found to be pretty accurate for past jobs. Can break it down length of pay period, etc.

Shit I Just did ADP and came out to only 95k a year (single, no dependents). That is depressing.

95 is consistent with what I've heard. Not a lot for a place like NYCAnonymous User wrote:Shit I Just did ADP and came out to only 95k a year (single, no dependents). That is depressing.

95k is not a lot but it seems that for many associates the only real nondebt payment expenditure is rent.

95k, in my pocket, is a LOT of money.... At least to me it is.

I'd always heard (and calculated) that NY is more like 105K?

I've heard 95ish. Did you account for 10% state tax?JamMasterJ wrote:I'd always heard (and calculated) that NY is more like 105K?

I just calculated 160k on a payroll calculator and it would be around 102k a year in NYC

Re: NY Biglaw Actual Pay
I think it took into account both state and fucking NYC tax. Did the state rate get raised or something? ETA: Yeah I'm getting about 98, though it's close to 105 assuming a 10k bonus, so maybe that's what I was using last time I looked. Market bonus is a foregone conclusion in the group I'm joining.mr.hands wrote:I've heard 95ish. Re: NY Biglaw Actual Pay
~$100K is more accurate; the person posting $95K is likely accounting for medical/dental and probably commuter costs; possibly even FSA medical. Most firms have shitty medical and the premium is around $300-500/mo and much more if you have dependents (I was paying over $1K/mo to get my spouse/kid on insurance).Anonymous User wrote:I just calculated 160k on a payroll calculator and it would be around 102k a year in NYC

What? I thought full medical was fairly standard.

LOL No. Also expect high deductibles. I've since gone in-house where full medical is standard and no deductible - saving me $15K a year on medical alone.Anonymous User wrote:What? I thought full medical was fairly standard.

It's around 8.2k/month for a single person.

Person who calculated 95 k here. My bad, I didn't include a bonus, just used a base of 160k.

It's not in your pocket if you have loans.Anonymous User wrote:95k, in my pocket, is a LOT of money.... At least to me it is.

Just 8.2k/month to work 16 hour days and sometimes on weekends, where I would be made to feel guilty for taking 2 weeks vacation of the 4 weeks I am allowed, with no time for family, friends, holidays etc. ?orangecup wrote:It's around 8.2k/month for a single person.
At that rate, I would rather be self-employed.

Most lawyers aren't creative, innovative or entrepreneurial enough to be self employed so we just grind away for our $8,200 a month until we can't anymore.

It's a ton of money and almost definitely more than any of you can make in any other way. Jesus Christ.

Re: NY Biglaw Actual Pay
How many threads in this forum ask what take home pay is on 160 in NYC while others lash out when people complain about how much their actual pay is?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
