Any NYC Biglaw Associates New to NY?
About to accept an associate position at an intense NYC firm without ever having lived in NY. Summered elsewhere - have been to NY only a few times altogether. Is this common? How difficult is it to get integrated and used to living in NY? Any advice, things you wish you would've known, etc.?

It's not bad. But if it's 3am and someone asks if you're Polish, you gotta give him a ride.

You'll be fine. You'll be working too much to have to worry about integrating into all that NYC has to offer.

New york is an amazing city. You can find whatever you want there. Unfortunately you won't really get to experience much of it besides the obnoxiously high rent and rush hour subway traffic

Would it be a good idea to move there during the summer while prepping for the bar? Or will I also equally have absolutely no time to experience the city then?jbagelboy wrote:New york is an amazing city. You can find whatever you want there. Studying for the bar was maybe one of the most fun summers I've had. People exaggerate how much time it takes to study for the bar. If you're not working a full time job, you should have plenty of time to do fun things.
The downside--cost. You will have to blow $5,000 in rent at a time when you're not getting paid. If that's not a problem, then go for it.

I'm personally a fan of moving to NYC early (I did it) because it gives you months of really fun times. Work has not started yet but my expectation is that I will be working so much there will be less fun NYC times.Anonymous User wrote:lawschoolftw wrote:You'll be fine. The downside is that late July through early September is definitely the absolute worst time to be in NYC.

I've been in NYC a few years, not a New Yorker though. It's just "okay" - not liveable long term IMO. I've lived in something like 5-6 towns/cities, and I would rather live in most of them than here in the long term.

Fall is the best time of year to be in NYC, but you will be locked indoors all day and night as a first year.
