Dumb question - do firms pay to fly you out to visit their offices again after extending an offer? Or is it more of a if you're around, feel free to stop by kind of situation?

Yes they do. It's a good use of your time and their money, IMO.

Wow, did not know that. I would rather visit again in the Spring closer to starting than now though...

Maybe you can get the firm to pay for your friends and family too, so they can see where you are going to be spending all of your time*

The point of the second look is to get a better idea whether you want to accept their offer. Spring not really in the cards..
