Good/Bad/Terrible Idea OCI

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jul 31, 2015 11:04 am

My school (dat TT) is a 100% preselect school and we got our results the last few days and I am happy. 23/25. However the school only allows you to actually interview with 15 or 16 firms and you have to cancel all of your other OCI bids.

So my question is this: is it a good/bad/terrible idea to email some of the firms I would like to interview with and tell them look the way the bidding and interview system blows and see if they would interview outside of the normal process (this would probably all depend on if they have the time slots available). I was able to do this with a firm I didn't bid on at all, and they said they would squeeze me in at OCI. I'm sure my CDO would be pissed but honestly F them and their incompetence (slightly bitter). I would do this with firms that would not be in my top 15 but it seems stupid for the school to limit exposure to firms.

My worry is that it comes across as well you aren't worth using one of my interview selections spot for but I think I can phrase it as some firms in the past have been willing to....blah blah.

Thoughts? Feedback? Questions?

Thanks all.

Good idea! As you seem to have figured out, career services is concerned with getting everybody in your class a job, not getting you the job that you want. Collegiality is nice and all, but you've got to look out for number one: there's nothing wrong with trying to conduct more interviews, especially with firms that have already expressed an interest in you.

Still, it's a balance - you only need one job, so if there are firms you're sure you aren't interested in, or after you already get one offer, it is good to trim your list. You do still want to maximize the odds of your classmates getting jobs, you just shouldn't be expected to handicap yourself in the process.

100% do this. The tough part will be deciding which firms to ax from OCI
