Screener early or late in day?
Got a screener at a larger firm. I get to schedule the time.
When is the best time to schedule? Early so I shit the bed and get it over with, or late so I shit the bed later in the day and can go to happy hour sooner?
tell me your thoughts wise tls.

Re: Screener early or late in day?
Not worth obsessing over.
Earlier probably better just because schedules can get off track if there are delays, and after lunch people can be sleepy, but really, nobody gets or misses jobs because of the time of day the screening interview is scheduled for.

10:30 is clearly the best time of day to have a screener.

Morning
Pros:
-Wow them right off the bat so they're like fuck all these afternoon jebronis, I found my guy in the morning
-still riding high off that morning coffee feeling good
-less burnt out from having the same conversation 10 times in a row
Cons:
-They forget you because some afternoon star shines brighter
-I, or even worse the interviewer, has to poop from that morning coffee and can't concentrate
-Less practice, going in cold
Afternoon
Pros:
-Be the last one on their mind, so they go to sleep dreaming of your awesome pointed questions
-Done a lot of practice ones to nail the one you truly want thus being able to answer why law school with your eyes closed
-not hungry
Cons:
-Get the itis after lunch and get sleepy
-maybe need to poop from lunch/afternoon coffee
-interviewer probably burnt out and mailing it in

Do afternoon. Lunch with associates is awkward af and you skip the lunch when you do afternoon slot.

Thread's about screening interviews, not callbacks.Anonymous User wrote:Do afternoon. Lunch with associates is awkward af and you skip the lunch when you do afternoon slot.

A solid and accurate pro/con list. I'd recommend either 10:30 or 1:30. Don't want to be at the end of the day when they're tired and sick of law students. Don't want to be the first one when they might still be tired or right before lunch when they're hungry.

Re: Screener early or late in day?
After careful analysis and self searching I have determined that in the morning, as your 3rd interview is the perfect time for your dream firm's screener. You've had some warm up and are ready. The interviewer has had a couple duds and you can now come in and show that you are different, you are the one, you will take this firm to the promised land.
You're in a flow and you wow the interviewer so much that he can't even concentrate on the next few interviewers. Once lunch comes he is calling the head recruiter and telling him to schedule your callback ASAP because you might just get an offer on the spot from a competitor in the afternoon.

Let's take this to the next level. Everyone doing OCI should keep stats and compile them to answer this question for future years.

I know it's slightly off topic, but wanted to say this may reflect more on you than the associates. What you seem to be saying is meeting people over food is awkward.....you'd better figure out how to fix that because its a super common place way to get to know new people, whether clients or business associates.Anonymous User wrote:Do afternoon. Re: Screener early or late in day?
I generally agree and fwiw the lunches I've had with associates at callbacks were the least awkward parts of the interview process. It is typically with younger (1st year) associates who are super chill - to the point where I have to catch myself and remember that I'm technically still in an interview.NotMyRealName09 wrote:I know it's slightly off topic, but wanted to say this may reflect more on you than the associates. Re: Screener early or late in day?
Exactly. For me as an associate whose done tons of these, I love call back lunches because I get to eat a big ol' high-class meal on the firm's dime. If the interviewee is just chill and rolls with it, that's what I want to see. The lunch is a test of "is this person normal, or will they embarrass me when we take a big client out for drinks." So the awkwardness comes from the interviewee's end - I, as the interviewer, have got nothing on the line so I'm chillaxed.Companion Cube wrote:I generally agree and fwiw the lunches I've had with associates at callbacks were the least awkward parts of the interview process.
