Any insights into the firm's culture and compensation structure would be very helpful and appreciated. They have the compensation posted on the website (http://www.honigman.com/careers-student ... efits.html) but the ranges seems absurd.

Don't know anything about the firm but can it possibly be true that they make partners after only four years???

They're not the highest paying firm in Detroit. Foley is, with Jones Day likely to match - Start at 140 w/ lock step increase. I'm guessing to meet those numbers they post either you get very lucky and bring in a client during your first few years - not impossible but not the easiest thing to do - or you're billing 2500-3000 hours per year.

I interviewed with them, got an offer but opted to go elsewhere. I liked the people i met but the office was franikly just not friendly nor welcoming. Honigman is like a NYC firm, but in Detroit - so take that with a grain of salt. They work you out but they're one of the top firms in the state so they get very good work - then again so does Foley and Jones Day and Dickinson, etc.

Most Michigan lawyers will suggest u stay away from them. Culture is New York. But pay is barely more than the other firms where u might actually bill 500hrs less

Because they are. I had a CB with them, the lead guy was an actual asshole - I was like, this is who you send out to convince people to join your firm? The other associates they sent were ok, but even their expressions were like "wow...." I've got a buddy there, and what you hear about their culture is generally true. They seem to think being an aggressive lawyer requires being a cockhole. They are a "hide the ball" firm when you're going against them, can't trust them to be collegial.

That said, the one thing I like they do that some firms don't (including mine, a large firm in Detroit) is the bullshit "promotion" to partner after a few years. It's meaningless, they are still just glorified 5th year associates - but clients don't give a fuck. My firm conditions making partner on getting business, yet you can be a sixth year associate here, competing for business against a 5th year Honigman "partner" - is a client going to hire the "partner" or "associate?" So stupid, so they do that right.

What are your thoughts on some of the other Detroit firms?

i had a case against a honigman senior partner and a senior associate (now partner). both upstanding and skilled attorneys.

i had another case against a mid-level partner. a gifted, diligent attorney.

my firm has another ongoing case against them now, but im not involved. i havent heard anything remarkable about their antics.

i guess you could say my experience w/ honigman doesnt match the bad press i read on these forums.

i find the smaller detroit-area litigation firms are the most vicious...likely because theyre the most desperate. i would be surprised were this phenomenon confined to detroit

Are their hours really that much more than say Bodman?

I personally know multiple ppl who did 2500+ hours

Do you at least get good experience out of it? Like stretching the model of super early(bordering malpractice experience) still applies to those hours?

Anyone willing to share how many weeks between your callback and offer at Honigman? 4 weeks today since callback, sent email expressing continued interest last week, still no ding.
