Resume Help - Research Assistant Specifics

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Jul 18, 2015 5:26 pm

I am a rising 2L trying to update my resume with my summer RA work, and it doesn't look impressive. It's pretty much two lines about analyzing, editing, and researching for a professor. However, the professor I'm working with has some pretty impressive credentials at the school (which is why I chose the job in the first place). She has some major awards named after her, and has been teaching for a very long time at my school.

My question is, is it possible to include that information on my resume? Or, is that tacky, and should only be brought up in interviews when asked how I spent my summer?

No. I can't see any good way to put that on your resume. If the prof really is a rock star though, and you did good work, then talk to her about jobs. Professors know people; I know a couple people who got jobs through profs they worked for. You should use her as a networking connection instead.

You could list the article that you worked on, which would probably be more impressive because it shows you contributed to a successful end product. I regrettably didn't do this, and didn't find out till years later I was on westlaw. Although this might have much worth, it's at least indicative of the fact you did a good job, which can be hard to substantiate with most of these 1L jobs. The bigger piece of advice I'd give is to practice talking about what you did in an exciting way. I found most of the research I was doing pretty boring, and worked for the professor mostly because our personalities meshed so when asked about the research, I was bored and could tell the person I was talking to was also bored.
