law firm bans ivy grads

Post by 03152016 » Wed Jul 15, 2015 7:44 pm

In order to strive to become one of New York's best real estate law firms we do not hire law school graduates from Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Columbia or any of the other traditional highest tier schools.

First, the top students from these law schools have no interest in applying for a job at our firm.

Nice anti-Penn trolling.

He's right...to a degree. If you can't get the people from the top of the class at the top schools...why not just go after the people at the top of the class at lower ranked schools? Why not take a student in the top 1% at Minnesota or Wake Forest over a median student at Harvard or Columbia?

For one thing, a top 1% student at a school like Minnesota probably has options that are as good or better than a median student at HLS or CLS. I doubt this guy is getting such students.

In general firms would probably be better off hiring the top 1-5% of T50 schools than focusing on t14.

"Secondly, many of these law schools either fail to rank their students or do not even grade them at all. (1) Ergo, the students have no incentive to work hard and learn when they have guaranteed summer associate positions and guaranteed job offers."

lol what

Also lol at taking a job here to compete over "1-2 coveted spots" versus taking a job at a firm with a 100% offer rate.

Right but I think firms a lot of times will hire bottom 1/4 at t14 over top 5-20% at a t50 and it doesn't make any sense.

Meh, it makes more sense if you don't associate law school grades with intelligence or competence.

Does it make sense if you don't associate undergrad grades and LSAT scores with intelligence or competence? Just sayin...

Makes sense to some degree. The only issue I have with some of the very high schools is they don't really have grades so its harder to know how well they think like lawyers or have a propensity for legal analysis. There is a firm in New Orleans kind of like this. They basically only hire summa and magna/clerk grads from Loyola, Tulane, and LSU. I will say that I don't think they are hurting in the talent department. At the same time, its a reasonable argument that all kids from T14 schools "get it", its just the kids at the top get it at a much higher level. At any rate, the attorneys at this firm are not really at the top of their classes. I don't consider cum laude at St. Johns to be top of class.

HYS certainly have grades, despite changing the letters.

This firm taking a stance against hiring ivy league graduates is like me taking a stance against dating supermodels

Client: why did you bill me 25 hrs to determine whether there was personal jurisdiction?
Partner: Because the associate graduated bottom 25% at CLS and first had to research what PJ was, then it took him 25%-50% longer than it would take me to read the cases and secondary sources and summarize them.
Client: click.
Partner: Hello? Hello? Hello? We have the best of the best here...

I think it's actually super common for smaller local firms to hire like this, in practice if not on purpose. They just don't spin it into some kind of selling point.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
