There's a big write-up on it in the oci alums answering questions thread, I believe. I don't remember the exact time-frames, but you should be online and ready to add them at the exact time they open. And you should click any interview time, because if you take the time to consider what works best for you, you'll miss it.

It is currently showing that K&E Chicago didn't fill. That can't be right.

I think it showed the same thing last year.

Also it seems like bidding results were released at around 1:30pm

Some people drop OCI before it starts (after bidding, before results). A slot is more likely to show up with the firms that interview half the class like K&E. It's the same every year.

Do we need to be at the ready to schedule interviews the minute they are released? Do they select more people to interview than there are slots? Cause I'm at work and worried if that's the case that I won't get to scheduling them in time. :/

No. You'll automatically be scheduled for the ones you successfully bid. There's a process slightly later on for filling open spots, and they should be emailing everyone about that soon if they haven't already.

Seems like I missed many of the ones I bid 12-20 for the large NY classes. Is it wise to mass mail to firms to which you bid, but didn't get an interview? Or is it better to just try to get a spot the day before?

Signups are ideal but plenty of people get interviews just by emailing

I feel like this shouldn't have to be said, but don't try to get an extra interview by standing at the door and jumping in at the start of another classmate's interview slot. It's kind of awkward for all parties involved.

Also, especially if you used past years' bidlists: anon-post your full bidlist here w/ hit/miss next to each. It helps out future years so much.

Yep. Come early in the morning and talk to them. Generally there are some open slots the attorney blocked off to take a breather that they will open up for you, there will be slots from classmates that have cancelled (after open sign-ups closed), or there will be five minutes before interviews, over lunch, or after interviews. Most attorneys say they know if they are going to hire the person within 5 minutes, so it's not really putting you at a disadvantage. I know tons of people who got callbacks this way.

Getting the interviews you missed isn't a huge deal, so if you missed something you really wanted, don't fret. Everyone I knew that really wanted a firm had a chance to interview with them through one of these methods.

Or if you're super paranoid because someone could look up every firm and cross out names until they figure you out, just post your misses.

Might even be considered smart to do that if you're applying to weird markets or boutiques. Or if you want to hide grades or something. But seriously, people left transcripts all over the place my year. It's interesting how no one cares about grades anymore. OCI is all that matters. (and then when you're a 3L people brag about bad grades)

So how many screeners do people normally come away with?

12-20 depending on the popularity of your market.

I saw a lot of NY bidlists, pretty much no DC. DC people can get around 30 when that happens.

Overall 18/50. Pretty bummed about Shearman, Skadden, and Cleary. I got Davis Polk NY at 11, so based upon the previous post, it looks like that's where it filled.

I’m leaving off the top of my bid list, first 10 were all hits anyway (got 16 out of 23 overall). I missed the ones I expected to miss, mostly just put them there because I felt weird about having a short bid list. All are Chicago except 22 & 23.

11. DLA Piper – MISS
12. Jones Day – MISS
13. Baker & McKenzie – MISS
14. Latham & Watkins – MISS
15. McDermott Will & Emery
16. Barack Ferrazzano
17. Miller Shakman
18. Edelson
19. Ropes & Gray – MISS
20. Foley Lardner – MISS
21. Greenberg Traurig – MISS
22. Covington & Burling (DC)
23. WilmerHale (DC)

Only 14/50 :/ Bid Chi and NY

Most of which are major player firms...legit worried about striking out now.

Whoops! Definitely meant Davis Polk

edit: Anon bidlist #2 also put DP at 11, so I guess it must have filled up there.

Bid Chicago hard + weird secondary with some random east coast firms to fill it out. Went 20 for 30, but a lot of that is in the weird secondary so I'm probably in a worse position than someone with 15 Chi/NY interviews:

Misses
8. Baker & McKenzie (Chicago, IL)
14. Sullivan & Cromwell LLP (New York, NY)
16. Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati (Multiple Offices)
18. Mayer Brown LLP (Chicago, IL)
19. Winston & Strawn LLP (Chicago, IL)
Unexpected Hits
17. Dechert (Chicago, IL)
20. Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz (New York, NY)
27. Miller Shakman & Beem (Chicago, IL)
30. Steptoe (DC)

19/50 bidding Houston/NY (with 1 DC). Only 5 NY, so I'm a little concerned.

While I was very transparent about the game theory nature of the bidding process and stand by every piece of advice I gave, I feel for those of you who felt safe with big NY firms at the 9-13 range and ended up missing some. It's just how the process works, and your class seems to be far more interested in NY or perhaps just more risk averse than the last two.

If Im a glutton for punishment and decide to do this again next year i will consider modifying my advice accordingly. In any event, happy to help with continue advice about the process now that another stage is over.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
