Most firms want you to study for the bar.

Re: latham Watkins
I have on good authority that the firm-wide start date will be sometime in October/November, but this will be finally decided in June. It will be before first-year academy in any instance.
The only way I could see anyone starting during the summer is if they graduated early and passed the February bar. This would be on a case-by-case/office need basis.

Some firms will pay post-3Ls (usually going on to clerk) to sit in the office, study for the bar, do the social events, and maybe do a token assignment or two. Latham could be one of them idk.
