housing stipend
I am going to a new city, and my friend is letting me live at his place for free and won't take any rent from me. But my job is offering me a 3k housing stipend. Can I just make a lease with him and then keep the money? The employer is f500 company. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: housing stipend
Usually the way stipends work is they just give you the money, you shouldn't have to provide receipts or anything.

Is 3k worth the small possibility that your job discovers that you have defrauded them?

Yea. Offer the friend the 3k anyway. Use it or lose it.eriedoctrine wrote:Is 3k worth the small possibility that your job discovers that you have defrauded them?

OP: I am not really looking for legal advice. I am more so looking for people who have actually dealt with this in the past.sublime wrote:Careful wrt legal advice ITT.

How do you envision this going down? It sounds like he already has a lease, which doesn't help you if the company wants a copy of the lease w your name on it. If you're signing a lease with him and not paying, I guess that might work. But who signs a 3 month lease?

Re: housing stipend
I assumed that he was entering a new lease with his friend as a co-tenant, not as his landlord.A. Nony Mouse wrote:Someone who's working in a city for 3 months?
OP, if you're talking about creating a lease to defraud a summer employer out of 3k (as someone suggested above) dear God don't do that. That's an impressively stupid idea

Yeah, I assumed the 3k was a summer stipend thing and the friend was a landlord, but you're right that it isn't really clear.

Re: housing stipend
Why can't you just create a sublease with your friend as the sublessor?

Re: housing stipend
tell your friend you will lose your stipend if you don't pay him
proceed to mooch off him for entire summer in every imaginable way
