When to move after graduation?
I am attending an east coast law school. The school ends in the middle may. My job starts in a TX law firm in late Sep. TX bar exam is the end of July. Should I move to TX immediately after the school is over?

When I did this I remained near my school for as long as possible--until a day before the bar exam--because the cost of living was lower. Then after the bar, I packed my belongings into a storage unit and traveled for a couple months until my firm's start date.

Don't you have to travel and book hotels for your bar exam? My current cost of living is on par with TX because I am sharing an APT.exitoptions wrote:When I did this I remained near my school for as long as possible--until a day before the bar exam--because the cost of living was lower. Sure, but my firm covered those costs.Anonymous User wrote:Don't you have to travel and book hotels for your bar exam? Re: When to move after graduation?
I moved to Texas right after graduation because my clerkship started three days after the bar. Even though I was studying for the Cali bar, I met TONS of people studying for the Texas bar at my nearby coffee shop, where I would study 2-3 days/week to get out of my apartment. It was awesome because we could all commiserate together. Those guys were easy to spot because you notice the Barbri books right away.
The only downside was that I had to finish unpacking after the bar. If you move sooner and settle in, you can just relax between the bar and your start date and not have to worry about it. Or, you know, take your bar trip!

I moved cross-country after finals were over and before graduation, and flew back for the ceremony. I could not imagine having to worry about a large move right before the bar exam. I was able to settle in months before the exam. I was happy with that decision fwiw.

I did not move nearly as far away, but I moved at the beginning of July. I did a lot of packing in stages and was lucky to make a couple of random trips over and drop off cooking stuff between the closing date and the date of the final move. It was pretty relaxed.

Isn't the bar exam at the end of July? If a moving company moves your stuff, everything can be done in a single day.alicrimson wrote:I did not move nearly as far away, but I moved at the beginning of July. Re: When to move after graduation?
They moved it, but the stage work was mainly done for packing purposes. I wanted to pack my own shit. That way, it's done the way I want it. The random drop offs were only done when I was in the area anyways. For example, when we did the closing, had some new furniture delivered, were checking up on some contractor renovations, etc. The drop offs weren't necessary, but made unpacking and the overall process easier for me.JAYINSD wrote:Isn't the bar exam at the end of July? Re: When to move after graduation?
It probably depends how many friends you have in TX. I was pretty low key about the bar, but some people go all crazy and try to reach 100% completion. If you lean more to the crazy, it will be tough meeting people in your new city. If you are chill, you'll have lots of free time so you might as well spend it where all your friends are.

This is a silly question to ask TLS. Where would you rather be?
Although I do second the advice about not having your move be right before or immediately after the bar, unless you have someone else planning it for you.

Re: When to move after graduation?
I think I will move either two months before the bar exam or a month (or more) after the bar exam. Moving too close to a bar exam is a big mistake.
