Re: Does mass mailing work for laterals?
I've never been in this situation, so I can't speak from experience, but I would think that a targeted and tailored approach would be even more important at the lateral stage than during initial law student recruiting. As a law student, you are still malleable, haven't built up specialized skills (or any skills at all for that matter), and would gel in various places and in various groups since you aren't set in anything.
But as a lateral, you have built up a certain skillset, have a better idea of what will gel with you, plus you only apply based on specific and targeted needs (as opposed to law students, who can apply to pretty much any and all firms, and at least have a shot).

Maybe check with in with your friends at other firms and see if there are any openings. I just took a lateral position two years in, based on a friend's 'good word' because I wanted a practice group change.Anonymous User wrote:Fairly junior. Litigation. I feel where you are coming from. I did recently my own search for a new law job (mostly out of curiosity and a bit of boredom), and nearly all of the leads I found wanted at least 3-5 years experience. Keep trying though, and always remember that you are good enough, you are smart enough, and doggone-it, people like you.Anonymous User wrote:Fairly junior. Litigation. Don't do it. You need to either do targeted mailings through contacts or send through a recruiter. If you are already in biglaw, you should have no problem finding a reputable recruiter. However, doing your own legwork and working your contacts is a far better option. Talk to friends at other firms, email alumni of your school and set up informational interviews. Mass mailings from practicing attorneys almost always go in the trash.Anonymous User wrote:Any success stories doing it?
