Can anyone tell me a bit about the recent history of these firms? Have they been doing well? Good reputation? Any groups growing? Know anyone that works there - do they enjoy it?
What about living in Austin?

Re: Austin offices of Andrews Kurth and Jackson Walker
Other people can give you more info than I can. Austin is great and people really like living there. The legal market though is small and insular, and to me it doesn't seem to be connected to Dallas or Houston (but maybe SV). Some people might like that though. I think both of those firms are viewed as having good Austin practices but my impression is they have different focuses so you might want to research them some to see which would fit with your interests.
I think Austin gets boring because it's basically the university and state government. It has small town resources/opportunities and big town problems (traffic is insane).
Edit: UT for UG and LS
