1L Summer: How to be a judicial extern & still pay the bills
Hi! I'm curious as to how people make ends meet their 1L summer working as a judicial extern or any position that doesn't come with $ (which is pretty much most of them). Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Some schools also have programs that will pay you something like $10/hour if you work for a judge, but I believe the heavy majority of schools only have this program for students who work in PI or for the government.

Do it as an externship for credit so you can take out additional loans.
(Not saying this is ideal, but it's what a lot of people I knew did.)

It's possible to extern for credit over the summer? I haven't heard about this before.NotMyRealName09 wrote:Yeah this.A. Nony Mouse wrote:Do it as an externship for credit so you can take out additional loans.

Plus 3-4 hours that you don't have to do during 3L.A. Nony Mouse wrote:Do it as an externship for credit so you can take out additional loans.

Most places. Check your school's summer course schedule.caligirl8 wrote:

Alternatively, use your school's additional laptop loan allocation ($3,000 at mine) if you have not already.A. Nony Mouse wrote:Do it as an externship for credit so you can take out additional loans.

Most people I knew did an RA job on the side (remotely if the judge was out of your law school city and the professor was chill)

I did something similar (externship class) and took another summer class for 7 credits/units which is awesome because I can take a lightened workload now.
My school also graded my summer class + externship seminar and so if you're gunning for a clerkship 7 units of a guaranteed A/A+ makes taking out the loans hurt much, much less.
