Interview for job opening w/ vacation planned in near future

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Nov 17, 2014 10:24 pm

I got a call today for an urgent job opening for a full time gig that I would really like at a biglaw firm. They said they wanted to fill the position really quickly, and want me to come in to interview with multiple people at the end of this week. The problem is that I brooked a trip from Friday December 5 to Monday December 8. I would for sure cancel the trip in order to take this job, but I really REALLY would like to avoid that. If I got the position, is there a good chance they would ask me to start before December 8th if the need was that urgent?

How the hell would we know? Just do the damn interview and get an offer. I doubt BigLaw firms even move that quickly that you would be working in 3 weeks unless it was indeed that urgent...Which case, you cancel the trip or tell them it was already booked and ask if its okay if you can go, but you are fine if you dont...I mean this is big law, your weekly check will more than cover your cancelled trip

After they extend the offer, you have to clear conflicts and background check and give notice (assuming you have a current job). That always takes a few weeks. Your trip is fine.

In my last biglaw job search, I got an offer 36 hours after interviewing, but I had two weeks to accept it, which I took. After that, it took a few days for me to get materials from former employer to run my conflicts check. That cleared quickly (though for some people it can take weeks), but my background check took a couple of weeks to process. I told the new employer I couldn't give notice until after they removed all contingencies, so then I had to give another three weeks' notice. And then I took three more weeks off before starting. My recruiter told me these time frames were fairly normal. Maybe they don't build in the cushion of three weeks' vacation in your case, since it's urgent, but they surely know that the offer/acceptance/removal of contingencies/giving notice process will take a few weeks.
