You'd be THE solicitor general? Like the guy appointed? That sounds badass but aren't you also massively unqualified?

This is a red wave state; let's not be surprised.dixiecupdrinking wrote:You'd be THE solicitor general? Like the guy appointed? That sounds badass but aren't you also massively unqualified?
As for OPs question: I would only do it if I were politically aligned with the state gov't and interested in politics. You'd be on the public stage with all that comes with that. It would probably be tough to hop back on the associate train if you hop off.

Like most on here I am not actually experienced with this, but I would think that if you were THE solictor general for a state you wouldn't be jumping back on the associate train if you decided to go back to private practice -- with 3-4 years as SG you'd be coming on in some special counsel position with the appellate wing of whatever firm you decide to join. If you are interested in appellate work this sounds like it would be awesome, both now and in the future when it opens even more baller doors. Take it.BeenDidThat wrote:This is a red wave state; let's not be surprised.dixiecupdrinking wrote:You'd be THE solicitor general? Like the guy appointed? This is the kind of crazy-lucky opportunity that boomers regularly experienced. You have a chance at the career path that went away with the dinosaurs. You'd be insane not to take it.

I would totally take the position, but I'm not at a firm nor do I want to be, so I have absolutely no idea what your firm prospects would be post-SG. I just think it would be a totally cool job.

Here are the questions to answer:
1) Do you have a desire to live in the state - your opportunities in the event of a political change are solid, but decrease the further you move away from the capital. So this is both a long-term and short-term concern.
2) Like someone said above - politics, both from your perspective and from the appointer's perspective will play a role. I work in an office that handles similar issues on a much smaller scale. My boss does not align with me politically, but we get along well. That's a real feel issue
3) Long term goals?
4) Will you be happy working there? Office mentality, etc
5) Have you managed/delegated before? Just something to think about.
congrats though, it's cool to have that choice.

talk about luck.
If you are a republican I would take it. If democrat, I would not. You will be labeled if you ever want more political work in the future.

Sounds cool. Maybe its like a clerkship/AUSA where the firm would be happy to have you back when you are finished.

Just wonderful to know that this is how our top state officials are selected.

lol at asking TLS about this. TLS is full of retards wondering if you could "go back to being an associate." Just fucking lol.
Obviously take the job, but this is a flame.

If you are asking TLS about this, you are massively underqualified for the position

Not TLS because TLS apparently can't even comprehend that the Solicitor General of any state is a really fucking good job.JusticeJackson wrote:I mean, maybe OP is underqualified, but where would you go to ask about what legal employment looks like after 4 years of public service in some random fly-over state? If someone can't parlay being a state solicitor general into some kind of subsequent employment, they need more help than TLS can give.

There's lots of precedent. Bush appointed all kinds of idiotic super-young US attorneys who fucked shit up all over the country with their incompetence and political mandate. Those of 'em that aren't still doing it are now rolling in dough.JusticeJackson wrote:I mean, maybe OP is underqualified, but where would you go to ask about what legal employment looks like after 4 years of public service in some random fly-over state? But on the bright side this fits with GOP ideology, that government is a disaster, and is incapable of being an actual aid to society. In your example, he simply "proved" this by assigning people without sufficent knowledge or experience and they lived up to the model of government as the source of problems.Tanicius wrote:There's lots of precedent. This whole thread reminds me of this woman's short-lived stint as youngest chief federal prosecutor in American history: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01582.html.
