Georgetown 3L - 3.49gpa - Advice

Post by Kirkhor23 » Fri Oct 31, 2014 8:35 am

Hey All,

I am a Georgetown 3L and I am graduating in May. I transferred in last year from a TTT in NYC. I did not get any callbacks from 2L OCI, nor any callbacks from mass-mailing. At the end of my 2L year I finished with a 3.49gpa. I ended up staying in DC for the summer and working for a solo practitioner who paid me a fairly decent wage. I submitted bids for 3L OCI but was not invited by any firms. Am I doomed or is it possible that I can still land a big law job? Would appreciate any positive feedback. Please keep the trolling at a minimum.

Also, FWIW I did recieve an A- in Federal Courts

????????

Anyway, honest feedback =/= positive feedback. It's unlikely you will get a biglaw job. What was your 1l GPA? You might want to broaden the scope of your job search.

It is possible but unlikely you can get biglaw. In order to maximize your chances, you should continue to network and reach out to attorneys. I know a couple of friends who got job offers this way. Don't give up. Even if you don't get biglaw you can probably get something in the government....

Do you recommend reaching out to alumni partners at big law firms and dropping my resume and transcripts via email?

Just for curiosity's sake...where does your 3.49 rank you in the class now? Just below median?

Just outside the top 33%. A 3.58 is top 33% and is awarded cum laude honors.

I would reach out and not send your resume first. Reach out first and chat with them to get "career advice"

Then they should get the hint. After maybe a few months you can reach out to them and ask them if they are hiring.

Everyone has a different style. Some are more direct than others.

If you're interested in litigation, try clerking for a year on DC Superior. Tons of judges looking now thru Spring. Pretty good pay. Buys you time to make more connections, etc. Don't get so caught up on making biglaw right now. Create a plan that will allow you to be there in 2 or 3 years. Clerking would be a good way to move up the chain. You could always try and parlay a DC Superior Clerkship into a fed dist ct one, which would be a great move.

Of course, all the above is pretty useless if you want to do anything non-litigation focused.

What did you do 2L summer? I'm assuming it didn't lead to any type of full-time offer? At this stage in the game you should be a lot more concerned about being able to find a job after you graduate, biglaw or not.

There could be some spring hiring due to junior laterals. But you won't find those openings unless people tell you. Make friends with everyone and mass mail in the spring. Not looking good but never let that stop you from trying.
