1L Summer T&E Options

As of now, my interest is in T&E, and I'd love to spend my 1L summer working in a small firm that does this sort of work. My question is whether this is feasible since the only semi-relevant course I will have taken at that point will be property. I'm fortunate enough to have access to a pretty big network of T&E attorneys, but I'd like to get a better idea of what to expect before I go looking for a summer gig.

as a 2L SA no one expects you to know anything. as a 1L SA they would expect you to know less than nothing. your course load won't have any impact, gl.

It will depend on the particular firm, of course, but I've certainly seen small T&E firms looking for help and advertising for any class of student. I suspect their main concern is not so much coursework (most firms aren't that concerned with coursework) as much as genuine interest in doing T&E.

In addition, the probate courts are often looking for help, so if you're in a big enough city to have specialty probate courts that's another option, not one that would pay, but probably one for which you could get school credit (or a school grant).

This is good stuff. Does anyone know if getting into T&E is more about grades or about networking? Of course I'm going to work hard to do both, but I can't imagine that T&E would put the same emphasis on grades as big law.

Graduated this May. Just started in the T&E department at a regional firm (between 100-200 attorneys in the firm). I focused my law school coursework on corporate and transactional stuff.

The most important things you can do to get this sort of job: take as many tax courses as you can; get great grades (obviously); focus on networking and social skills. The social skills are important because you will have to build a book of business if you want to be viable as a partner. (In a large firm, the other major source of work is from executives/business owners that use the firm for corporate and litigation work (in fact, some T&E groups at larger firms are really just an ancillary group and are not large business generators within a firm).
