Public Interest class of 2016
So I decided to make this thread for 2Ls who are looking to do public interest either this coming summer & post graduation. Welcome! You either struck out or have been gunning the whole time but all are welcome.
I figure we can use the board to talk about interviews/timelines at major offices (maybe even some 3Ls or alumni can help us out at times), funding, anxieties etc. This is meant to include anyone doing PI not just PD/DA gunners.

Sweet, what time of work are y'all looking to do? I am a PD gunner. I sort of wished I had done OCI to practice interviewing. Sometimes I have a hard time answering the why PD questions even though I have a million answers.

Hi folks! I'm a 3LOLer aiming for PD/Legal Aid. Feel free to shoot me ?s about the PI internship hunt, finding funding, interviews, etc.
FWIW, I was jerbed for my 2L summer in the end of December, so don't freak out when you see all of your private sector buddies bragging about their positions in the fall. It's still quite early when it comes to public interest summer jobs. GL!

A friend of mine worked at the National Law Center of Homelessness and Poverty two summers ago. From her Linkedin profile, these are some of the things she did:Anonymous User wrote:Anyone have experience working at Legal Aid of DC or the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty?
"Developing outreach materials, trainings and presentations to ensure the effective implementation of national, state and local laws regarding homelessness. Creating outreach and educational materials to protect and expand housing rights for survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence. Shaping and implementing programming to protect and enhance the education rights of homeless and unaccompanied children and youth."

Sometimes I am jealous of my biglaw bros who aren't expected to be passionate about the firms work in their interviews.
Right now I am prepping for EJW and I have an interview for a position I want so badly. It is an incredible fit in so many different ways. I have been working with CSO and met with my Dean who are all like "zomg that is perfect you have to get it". Obviously it is not that easy. I am worried that I will just bomb the interview or I just won't be competitive enough for other reasons.
How is everyone else's job hunt coming along? I feel like we will soon be competing with the strike out folks.

Is taking PI oriented classes important at all? What if you don't have much of a PI oriented background?

Yes. If you're aiming for PD, for instance, it would be a red flag if you didn't take evidence or crim pro.Kratos wrote:Is taking PI oriented classes important at all? What if you don't have much of a PI oriented background?

Re: Public Interest class of 2016
Every PI/gov interview I have done has included questions about 'why this job?' and 'what on your resume shows your interest in this job?'. Taking PI oriented classes are a must if you want to get a competitive PI job; it shows interest and some knowledge about the subject area.Kratos wrote:Is taking PI oriented classes important at all?
