How To Get Jobs After Dropping Out
So I'm going to drop out after 2L fall. Struck out at OCI (underperfomred my stats quite a bit, but not important), and have decided this shit just isn't for me.
I'm K-JD but had excellent UGrad GPA in econ/finance. How do I write cover letters/create a resume to get noticed?

Your undergrad career services office should be able to help with that, and there are tons of resume/cover letter resources around the web. What are you interested in?

Some kind of entry level financial/business analyst position would be great.jewkidontheblock wrote:Your undergrad career services office should be able to help with that, and there are tons of resume/cover letter resources around the web. What are you interested in?

What were your stats? You haven't struck out yet. Numerous firms are still hiring.Anonymous User wrote:So I'm going to drop out after 2L fall. Struck out at OCI (underperfomred my stats quite a bit, but not important), and have decided this shit just isn't for me.

T20, ~Top 20%. I'm still doing the hustle (can't get this semesters tuition back), but a recent rejection I really didn't expect + hearing nothing positive about being a lawyer (especially biglaw) from nearly anyone for a year has made me take a hard look.whitecollar23 wrote:What were your stats? More or less, in a reasonable time frame, and followed up.whitecollar23 wrote:Did you apply to literally every NY firm?Anonymous User wrote:T20, ~Top 20%. Not literally every firm, assumed I would get ties dinged. Would be worth the long shot now, since it would be low effort.whitecollar23 wrote:What about Boston?

Even if I were to get a biglaw job, I'm not sure that I want it.

Re: How To Get Jobs After Dropping Out
I happen to know of a Boston firm still hiring. I know around 7-10 firms who are still calling people in to interview (at least in the last week).bjsesq wrote:How many metropolitan areas are we going to throw out there?whitecollar23 wrote:What about Boston?

just apply to jobs bro. you'll have to figure out a way to explain the two year gap but you knew that already. it won't be easy but at least you won't be racking up more debt.

Luckily, gap is only 1 semester (worked through 1L spring, interned in summer pre law school, working right now)....still have to explain away the drop out.patogordo wrote:just apply to jobs bro. you'll have to figure out a way to explain the two year gap but you knew that already. it won't be easy but at least you won't be racking up more debt.

as someone who's dropped out of multiple schools, i'm not gonna say it's easy, but it's not a death sentence. just come up with a good explanation that fits your situation and get comfortable talking about it in a way that makes it sound like a positive experienceAnonymous User wrote:Luckily, gap is only 1 semester (worked through 1L spring, interned in summer pre law school, working right now)....still have to explain away the drop out.patogordo wrote:just apply to jobs bro. you'll have to figure out a way to explain the two year gap but you knew that already. it won't be easy but at least you won't be racking up more debt.

Did you list the school you just dropped out of? My inclination is that the experience I have is good enough that I could explain how it relates, and just say "my career aspirations have changed, and they now aligned less with and more with [your business]." Makes it clear that it wasn't a decision of obviously being a fuck uppatogordo wrote:as someone who's dropped out of multiple schools, i'm not gonna say it's easy, but it's not a death sentence. just come up with a good explanation that fits your situation and get comfortable talking about it in a way that makes it sound like a positive experienceAnonymous User wrote:Luckily, gap is only 1 semester (worked through 1L spring, interned in summer pre law school, working right now)....still have to explain away the drop out.patogordo wrote:just apply to jobs bro. you'll have to figure out a way to explain the two year gap but you knew that already. it won't be easy but at least you won't be racking up more debt.

Re: How To Get Jobs After Dropping Out
i still have it on my resume but it was kinda unavoidable for me. resume wouldn't have made any sense without it.
i would probably just list the work exp if i were you and explain the law school thing in interviews? it just looks a little weird to have like "XX Law School, didn't finish" at the top of your resume. basically i would deemphasize it but not hide it, if that makes sense.

Re: How To Get Jobs After Dropping Out
Before dropping out, you should consider how attractive legal jobs outside of biglaw would be to you. There are gov't, PI, IH, midlaw and small law jobs that do not operate on the OCI timetable. If these are jobs you might want, it probably doesn't make sense to drop out at this point. Top 20% from a good regional school should get you a decent legal job if that is a desirable outcome to you.
