post-CB round?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Sep 30, 2014 2:13 pm

I can't give away too much details given I am assuming this is very rare, but has happened. I won't be naming the firm's location. Basically, it's big law. I had a CB and got a request for another interview. What is this? A sign of some polarized opinions during my original cb? Halp. and don't tell me to quit reading tea leaves, I think it's really important bc I don't know whether to approach this as "gotta blow this guys socks off" or "just don't be a bumbling idiot". thanks.

Well to be fair you are reading the tea leaves. I seriously doubt anyone will know. I don't think this is very common in BL. If you really have two settings in interviews, don't be an idiot and blow an interviewer's socks off, it's it generally advisable to always blow socks off. Just do that. I don't see how this is any different that a typical tea leaf reading query.

I actually did two more interviews for my summer firm post-CB - one phone interview with a partner who wasn't there during CBs, and then a live interview with the managing partner. Just take it as you did the CB. You know they're interested, but you're probably not the only candidate. You can pretty much say the same stuff. It's even easier post-CB, really, b/c you know that what you said the first time probably worked. Good luck!

OP, this kinds of situation actually happened to me twice during my 2L OCI. I had a callback with biglaw, 2 weeks later recruiting called me that they want to do a second round because certain partners are not there. So I went in, met with 2 partners and got an offer 2 days later.
Again, another biglaw, about 3 weeks after callback, the recruiter called me saying that because I didn't meet enough people in certain practice group so they would like me to do a phone interview with a partner in that practice group. However, what really happened behind the scene was that the hiring partner was not happy with me despite that everyone else has given me positive reviews (I learned this from another member in the recruiting committee). After the phone interview, ding was received within a week.

Anyways, reading tea leaves won't help. You don't really know what's happening behind the scene. If you really want the firm, you should go to the interview, be well-prepared and make a good impression on whoever that's interviewing you.
