Judicial Internship or Clerking at a Law firm?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Sep 19, 2014 8:31 pm

So at this point it's safe to say I struck out at (2L) OCI, and I'm look for other things that can boost my resume/make me more attractive to a biglaw firm. Seriously considering applying to several judicial internships through my school for the spring semester, but the catch is most of these judges don't allow students to have any outside legal jobs while they intern.

The problem is I have a pretty good shot at a law clerk job for this semester. Not a law firm, but I would be essentially working with their "in-house" counsel. It's a growing firm, so < 300 employees right now, and there is potential for it to transition into a full time job if the firm keeps going at this rate. Not exactly the type of law I want to go into, but close enough that I would be happy with the experience. My 1L summer I interned at a couple small to mid size law firms, so I already seem to have that type of experience listed on my resume. I wanted to get some perspective on whether it would be better to:

1) take the job, make some money, hope it leads to a full-time job, or at least stick it out until my 2L year is over for the experience (forfeiting any judicial internship experience)

2) forget about the job, and leave myself open to judicial internships for the spring

I really don't want to burn any bridges, so if I take the job I would have to keep it for a couple semesters at least. Any anecdotal advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Or if these both sound like a waste of time, would love to hear why as well.

Law firm. Money and the potential for a full time offer vastly outweigh a potential judicial internship (those things are a dime a dozen).
