Working at a different employer after grad?
Say I work at the same employer my 1L and 2L summers (not biglaw).
3L year, how common/successful is it to get hired at a new firm post-grad? aka one that you've never been at before. Also, one in a different practice area than what you've done the past two summers?
Related, if you work at a firm 2L year, when do they typically offer you post-grad employment? Are you typically supposed to accept on the spot?
If you couldn't tell, I'm with a firm my 1L and 2L summers in practice area X, but career-wise I'd like to do practice area Y, but have no prior experience.

I'm a little confused about your timeline. What year are you and how do you know you're going to be working for the same firm 1L and 2L summers? I ask just because it doesn't sound like you've worked there yet. Why are you working for them both summers when you don't want to work in practice area X?
Big firms usually make offers to (2L) summer associates at the end of your summer, and you don't have to accept on the spot. It's not as common/easy to get hired by a new firm during 3L, but it's possible - usually if you have an offer from your 2L firm. I don't know how easy it is to change practice groups.

Re: Working at a different employer after grad?
Sorry, the original post was a bit jumbled.
I'm a 2L. I worked at X firm last summer and have an offer to work at X firm my 2L summer. I'll probably accept, because I don't have much else going on. I don't hate the practice area, but it's not ideal.
So you see, I'm wondering about working at X my 2L summer but jumping into a different firm and practice area when I graduate. I'll probably just end up staying at X. But I'd like to hear what people say.
Also, since I already worked at X my 1L year, they told me after the summer that I could come back my 2L year, or try something new, and that I'd always be welcomed back (no bridges burned, it's good to get new experiences, just let us know, etc). So obviously I don't want to string them along, but how late is too late to accept? My school still has interviews going on in mid-October and I feel like that is leaving them hanging too long.

Consider this good motivation to get excellent grades as a 2L. Also take classes and/or participate in organizations that are connected to your practice area of interest.

Re: Working at a different employer after grad?
Sure, I'm already on that. But my question is, at the end of this summer, if firm X offers me a post-grad position:
a) how long do I have to respond by?
b) how difficult is it finding employment with a new firm 3L year?
c) would it just be smarter to stay at firm X and suck it up. It's not a bad place by any means, just not ideal.

a) If it's a NALP firm you have until October 1st to accept your offer. Non-NALP can be whatever they want.Anonymous User wrote:Sure, I'm already on that. But my question is, at the end of this summer, if firm X offers me a post-grad position:

b) It's not easy to find employment as a 3L, but it's a little easier to get a firm job if you've already summered at a firm and received an offer.
c) Hard to say without knowing specifics. If you have no other offers then obviously you have to stay at firm X. But if you can get something else at a firm more aligned with your practice area interests I'd probably take it because there is a good chance the firm you're with next summer will be the one at which you start your career. You don't want to be a first year working in a practice area completely unrelated to whatever it is you want to do if you can avoid it.
