Hewlett-Packard starting salary - new grads

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Aug 31, 2014 10:29 pm

Does anyone know what HP pays new grads for its in-house program? I've heard some people say $115K (+15K bonus to start) and others have said $150K. Would really appreciate any insight.

One of my interviewers told me 150k unprompted.

Did you do a cb there? PA office? Any news on offers/idea of timeline?

Not OP, but HP came to OCI for us.

Not OP, but my friend is interviewing there next week and they said they'd let him know within a week.

Thanks for info. Would appreciate you and others keeping us posted about any movement. Do you know if your friend is lit or corp or ip?

As for me I went in about a week ago and haven't heard back. Know of someone else in similar situation. They didn't give either of us a timeline

Two years ago it was $115,000 plus a $15,000 signing bonus. While it might have increased since then, $150,000 sounds too high.

Friend from school got an offer yesterday. She interviewed late last week I think. She said salary was 150K.

Thanks for the info. Mind saying which school and whether your friend is lit or corp or ip? Do you happen to know if she will accept?

If you guys had offers from hp vs. big law firms in the area (wsgr, Cooley, fenwick, etc), and your end goal is in house, hp would be a no brainer right? Or is there any reason you'd still pick a firm over hp?

The argument is generally that in house likes firm experience but the opposite isn't true

That makes sense. So I guess if you still had ideas that you wanted to maybe go to a law firm, then starting off in house wouldn't be the best idea. Seems like it comes down to whether you are sure you want to foreclose the law firm option.

As an in-house lawyer myself, I generally don't criticize people who want to go in-house in preference to a firm job. Hours are much better, stress (at least in my experience) lower and compensation pretty generous considering the hours and stress. Generally, though, your in-house options after a few years of firm experience will be better (both in terms of quantity and seniority of position) than they are before graduation, which shouldn't be surprising given how much training-under-fire occurs at law firms.

This is generally very much true. But in this specific case of the HP program that apparently pays almost as much as a firm and likely more if you include things like stock options, highly subsidized health benefits, and 401k match, it seems like you're getting an in-house position straight out of school that's very much on par with what you would be lucky to find after several years at a firm. In fact, this program seems like one of the best post-law school outcomes that's possible: in-house hours with a possibly higher than law firm compensation package.

Can't disagree. As I said, I love the in-house life. It is possible, though, that more lucrative in-house options will become available down the line for a junior-to-mid-level associate than might be available to someone who's been in-house since graduation.

Bump on this. Also wondering what office? I have a CB next week and am paranoid they might get filled up since I am interviewing so late!

Mind saying what group you're interviewing for? I was lit and I knew a corp. interview was few weeks ago. Also do you know which group they are taking more people in?

I am interviewing for the Lit group in the Plano office. I do not know which group or office is getting the more people.
How was your interview?

Oh nice. I interviewed for Palo Alto. I think PA as an office is taking the most people just by virtue of its size and it being the headquarters. I thought my interview went well, everyone was nice and the questions weren't too bad. I've definitely been on edge though just because it's been a few weeks since I've heard anything at all. Good luck on your CB and please post here with any updates. I'll do the same.

You are probably right. I am interviewing at their Palo Alto office so I am excited to see how the headquarters looks. I will ask for a time frame on when I might expect to hear back during my CB and will keep you informed.

HP came to OCI for us too. Thought the interview went well but haven't heard anything at 3 weeks, was planning on following up either today or tomorrow. Any advice? (School: MVP, Office: Herndon/DC)

Don't think it could hurt to follow up. The only offer I've heard of is that one poster in this thread. Seems like they want to make their decisions all at once (correct me anyone knows anything to the contrary)

EDIT: wait, follow up post CB or screener?
