A friend of mine summered at Latham SD this summer, and I was at a different office. We both got offers and accepted them without hesitation.

Firm wide, Latham is very busy right now. Every office is at pace or above, NY is busy, Houston is slammed and the entire west coast is busy.

I dont know a ton about the SD office, but it is stable (as stable as any office can be IMO). They arent growing much, but they have maintained a size/increased slightly for several years. I know they have work. Latham also just moved and spent a lot of money on a new SD office. I doubt they would have done that if the office was in any kind of trouble.

I'll see if I can find out more from my friend and get back to you.

It is supposed to be a great office to work at. There seems to be a lot of interoffice work done there, and all of the Latham attorneys I have spoken with talk about how great the SD office is. But doesn't appear to be an actively growing office.

I interviewed with someone last year who was moving from the SD office to the LA office, but I got the impression that it was voluntary. She had spent several years doing corporate stuff, wasn't going to make partner, but wanted to stick around and was able to move to employee benefits as a third year. That practice isn't available in SD, so she went up to LA. No one else made it seem like moving to another office was ever required, although they want partners to have spent some time in at least three offices before getting promoted.

That associate also talked about how tough it was during the layoffs to see good friends leave (she was a second year at the time). I believe that all of the first years in that office were canned but a few might have survived.

And yes they just moved everybody up to a new building in Del Mar. The corporate people used to be next door and everybody else downtown, but now they're all in this new building.

Notwithstanding the fear of Lathaming, Latham SD might be the best biglaw outcome in North America. No offer for me though.

Have close friend that is an associate there. He was extremely miserable the first year, and his hours were comparable to NYC biglaw, but now things seem to have mellowed out and he is enjoying it much more and is home by around 6:00 everyday and works a bit from home. Financials seem solid, at least on the corporate side, but exit options in the SD area appear very limited.
