How to mass mail EFFECTIVELY?

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Aug 23, 2014 2:04 pm

For those who've had success with mass mailing, what's the most effective way to do it?
I'm trying to target mine but it's difficult when most firms are the similar.
Any tips?

It's way too late to be wasting time customizing mailers. Just send your generic mail merge letter to every firm in the country, at this point.

Had mild success by expressing particular interest in both the practice group and location of firms in places that care about ties. (I.e. pharmaceuticals in DC, energy in Houston, IP Lit in Dallas)

Had zero success in blindly blasting generic cover letters to firms, particularly NY.

Some people here say they send 150 generic mass mails to get 1 CB... wtf? There are only like 200 market paying firms to start with, why would you blow you chances with everyone sending something that is generic crap?

edit: I've also had several attorneys have my cover letter printed out in mass mail CBs, and reference them during interviews. Why squander any opportunity to sell yourself as effectively as possible? If you can bullshit your way through a Why X firm in the interview, why not put it in the CL??

Because you don't know who might give you an interview when you're writing cover letters. It's way easier to send now and come up with a"why x"after you get an interview than to come up with that for every firm you send something to. Should you tailor cover letters for all your top choice firms? Absolutely. Should you not send applications to some firms because you don't have time to tailor the cover letter, or put off sending them until mid September? I think not.

For reference, I sent about 300 generic mass mails and have 5 callbacks and about four other screeners. I consider that a pretty damn good conversion rate for mass mail, and I expect to get a few more.

OP Here
I sent 100 so far and no success. I've been tailoring them slightly (some more than others).

Median at T6 so just wondering if there's something I could do that might help

Make sure you put your school's name in the subject line. Lead with your strengths. (Obviously not applicable* to people whose school name doesn't carry much weight)

Your school is obvious based on your email address

Don't assume the recruiter will see that. Make it easy for them. Not too many people see the domain name of your email address first (or second or third).

Yep. Many times it just says your first and last name with you having to click to see the actual address

Is it okay to mass mail firms you were dinged at OCI if it's a different office?
or is this frowned upon?

Depends. If they use LawCruit (or whatever online system) they will see you already were rejected and be like wtf? But at the same time, maybe the offices don't really communicate that much-there are some like this

If they already rejected you, who cares what they think anyway?
