Accepting summer offer at a firm rumored to merge?
Would it be risky to accept a summer associate position at a reputable firm in NY that's been rumored to merge with a comparable firm based in DC? Really have no clue. Thanks.

ymmv but I would do it only if it was your only offer. When a firm merges, some associates normally get screwed over. I'd be sure to check the leverage ratio between the firms, and I'd be esp wary if there was a disparity

Agreed. I was big on Bingham during my earliest research, but they had TONS of partner defections this year, and after attending their NYC summer reception, very few people actually seemed "happy" to be there. Good morale was in short supply. My interest in the firm deteriorated after that experience.sundance95 wrote:If so, DON'T go unless only optionAnonymous User wrote:Bingham?Anonymous User wrote:Thanks for your opinion.
That being said, if it is your only offer, by all means take it. It is still a notable firm, and excels in certain practices, it is just going through a very rough patch this year, without any immediate resolution in sight.

What's the risk for summer associates though? No-offers? Or worse yet, biased treatment for promotions because you're from the "mergee" firm?

I'd say offer rescission and layoffs are pretty much the only fucking risks I'd need to hear about O_oAnonymous User wrote:What's the risk for summer associates though? No-offers? Or worse yet, biased treatment for promotions because you're from the "mergee" firm?

Do offer rescissions actually happen to SUMMER ASSOCIATES though? Sounds like it would give the worst reputation to a firm for future recruitment.
