What 2L summer job can make up for striking out at OCI?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Aug 22, 2014 7:36 pm

I'm at a T10, completely struck out (even with LR). Come 3L, Are there 2L jobs I should be hunting for that will justify not having a SA position from OCI?

Could always go PI then explain that you've decided PI wasn't your thing

Extremely hard to get, but (non-EOIR) DOJ SLIP might do it.

Already 100 firms deep through mass mailing. 0 positive responses, a few rejections. Any suggestions?

It would have to be some pretty damn prestigious PI, I imagine.

And I would guess that prestigious fedgov program would be the best. Maybe working for a prestigious/connected judge?
Working for a judge? So, externship?

The best part about doing this is the realization that you're probably never going to get out of debt. Oddly comforting so to speak. But not really.

Struck out in 2L from T6 with top 15% grades. Worked in house at a big bank this summer. Got V10 offer through 3L OCI/resume collect.

Being able to talk finance jargon helps if you're looking for corporate.

This isn't responsive to your question, but I think you need to figure out why you struck out despite being on law review at a T10.

As others have said keep trying to think of new places to mail. I understand mentally preparing yourself for the possibility you strike out but you definitely should not give up mass mailing yet. I mass mailed some extra places I thought of a week or two ago and two firms just recently contacted me about interviews. The process definitely isn't over yet so keep at it.

Seconded/thirded. 100 is barely "mass" mailing. Many people send 200+ and probably only see a small handful of CBs from it, if any. But all it takes is one.

Does the school we attend mean much? For example does a t14 kid have better chances at vault firms over non t14? And does HLS have higher chance of high vault forms than say low t14? Or are all options bad for everyone at this point

Keep checking your school's job postings every day. Lots of mid-sized, boutique, and small market firms post shortly after OCI. I know if feels like OCI is everything at the moment but it's really not. I struck out at OCI after going on 5 callbacks. I ended up with a 100k job in the practice area I wanted, and only a short commute from my preferred market. The SA job that I got was posted in September. Lots of my friends got paying jobs at smaller law firms too and got great experience even if it didn't lead to a permanent position.

How did you end up getting your inhouse summer job?

I'm median at T6 and I might strike out...

Popped up on school's career site very very late in the recruiting season. I'm talking like late April--had my callback interview one week before Spring finals.

I also did not have an SA my 2L summer and worked in house for a financial firm. Ended up getting two CBs from V10 firms and an offer from one. Employees at financial firms have a lot of connections with big law firms, and most financial firms are clients of multiple big law firms. (in NYC)
