Mass Mailing Success Stories
As a morale booster, I thought it would be nice to share some mass mail success stories. It's an uphill battle, but good outcomes are possible. Last year, I received two offers from mass mailing: one from a V100 and the other from a V5. Keep your chin up and send those resumes.

Thanks for the support. Do you know if there is a list anywhere that shows which firms often interview mass mailers vs. firms that never interview mass mailers?
I am mass mailing currently, but have had no luck so far.

OP here. I don't know of such a list, but I think firms that didn't participate in your OCI would be more likely to respond to a mass mail. That said, one of my offers came from a firm that did participate in mine.Anonymous User wrote:Thanks for the support. You can also get interviews from mass-mail from firms that you didn't get interviews with at OCI. I had that happen once, and my school is 100% preselect (didn't get the job, though).

mass mail success #2: was mass mailing while waiting for recruiting results. i got 4 more cbs but cancelled one when i got a v10 offer.
there is no public list of "firms who interview via mass mail." just keep mailing until you get a job; there's no shortcut to this part of the process

Yes. Can you guys post your stats? I'm a little above median at duke and have mailed about 160 firms. So far have gotten like 4 dings and 1 callback.Anonymous User wrote:does online application equate to mass mail?

I would call that a reasonably successful MM campaign, if you're asking in the context of setting expectations.Anonymous User wrote:Yes. Can you guys post your stats? Re: Mass Mailing Success Stories
Top 25% at CCN. I had a complete failure of an OCI. 25 screeners --> 2 callbacks --> 2 dings, and 300 mass mails --> ~7 callbacks --> 7 dings. Finally broke down and sent another 80 mass mail applications to new markets (this was about 2 weeks after OCI was over), and from that I ended up with exactly one callback that lead to one offer at a V10 firm.
Moral: Even when you think you have the credentials for biglaw, or you think that you've mass mailed enough, you're wrong until you actually have an offer in hand. Everyone who doesn't have an offer yet should stop reading this and go mass mail some more.

Re: Mass Mailing Success Stories
I was probably fairly deep into to 25% but not quite top 15% at MVP and received zero callbacks from something like 18 screeners. I probably sent around 80-120 mass mails and received something like nine callbacks in total (plus a screener from a 10th firm that didn't convert into a callback). I canceled two of those callbacks after receiving my first offer. I ended up getting an offer at a v100 and a v15. The offer I took came pretty late into October I believe.

I've already racked up 4 callbacks from mass mail including a V5. All in major markets. Also several more screeners.

Re: Mass Mailing Success Stories
Quick question: I am mass mailing but its taking forever. Are you guys sending a generic mass mail cover letter? I have 3 cover letters for the three markets I have ties to plus NYC. I have a spot where I spend two sentences on why I like the firm, and it takes me a while to visit the firm website to find a unique fact of why I like the firm.
Are you guys targeting your emails to the specific employer or are you you guys mass mailing generically? Have you found a difference between the two?
Thanks

Re: Mass Mailing Success Stories
I don't think anyone reads the cover letters. There are so many people. I really think it's 100% transcript, and luck. Just changing the firm name will more than suffice. It's recruiting who is reading your shit. They are insanely busy this time of year, get 100s of emails, and generally can leave at 5. If they have an opening, like your school, you're above the cut off, and at the right part of their inbox at the right time then you get a callback.Anonymous User wrote:Quick question: I am mass mailing but its taking forever. Source: Multiple CB offers in September of last year at V-20 NYC + DC firms (didn't do them, because had already committed). I forgot to change the firm's name in many. That's the basis of my logic.
My experience was carpet bombing a market is more effective than individualized emails if it enables you to apply to much more firms, because your cover letter may not be being read by a strong majority of firms. I know people swear by the opposite, but I think that these people might have a more legitimate reason than "you're good at x, and I want to do x" for liking a place.

Re: Mass Mailing Success Stories
I have 4 cover letters I use. A NYC corporate, NYC litigation, home market corporate and home market litigation. I change the name of the firm, put in the recruiters name, and change the practice groups I'm interested in to the firms 2-3 biggest/highest ranked on chambers.Anonymous User wrote:Quick question: I am mass mailing but its taking forever. Re: Mass Mailing Success Stories
This thread is uplifting. I'm top 10% at a TTT (it was free) and have been mass mailing recently. Though not firms, I have received 2 interviews from Honors Attorney programs. Received about 5 dings so far via mass-mail but I've been networking like crazy.

Got to the OCI location early. Reached out to the interviewers to let them know I am interested but wasn't able to fit their firm in my schedule and would like to see if they had an opening for sometime today. Hand them my resume. They either say yes, email me later telling me to come back, say no, or I never hear from them. If they say no, so what - I'm in no worse of a position than if I never reached out.
So far out of the 3 I've done this to, I've landed 2 screeners and 1 CB with the other pending.
