What a USAO wants to hear

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Aug 15, 2014 8:07 pm

Suppose somebody is interested in securing a 1L summer internship with a USAO. Suppose further that this person doesn't aspire to work at a USAO after graduation but instead wants to work in biglaw and has heard that firms regard USAO internship experience as valuable. How should this person respond in a USAO interview when asked, "Why do you want to work here?" I imagine it would be bad to say, "I think it would help me get a biglaw offer." But I also would have to think that people in the US Attorney's Office don't expect all of their interns to be aspiring US Attorneys. How should this question be answered?

For starters, maybe talk about the work and the kind of unique experiences you could have at the USAO which really excite you and will be useful in your development as a lawyer? I mean USAOs don't even hire full time attorneys without at least 5 years of practice experience, and they're some of the most coveted and competitive legal positions in existence, so it would be ludicrous for them to expect every intern they take to have aspirations of pursuing work with them immediately after LS. It's not a DA's office.

(For the record: this got moved to this forum because anyone who's asking about a 1L summer internship at this point is not yet a law student. I didn't grok at first that they were posting anon, which isn't available in this forum. So if you were wondering how that was possible, that's why.)
