Apply direct as well as through Resume Collect?
Is this obnoxious? I am really really interested in this firm and was going to send a direct email to an alumni even though I applied through my school's resume collect. Too much?

If I were you, I wouldn't "Apply" through the alumni but still email him/her to connect. Ask to talk on the phone at a scheduled time to ask questions. If you can make 1-2 contacts beforehand it will be helpful for your follow-up email to the recruiter (whomever was listed on symplicity) - mention you spoke to X and Y and how it reinforces your feelings about firm Z.
I contacted an alum at a firm in my school's resume collect as well. I received an email for a screening interview a few days later (without having to send the follow-up email though). Good Luck!
