URM OCI Thread
Thought I'd go ahead and open this up. A number of people on TLS have a lot of experience with and knowledge of URM job hunting.
Did people do a lot of diversity fairs?

Re: URM OCI Thread
I have seen many posts on TLS about receiving a boost at OCI if your AA. Does a similar boost exist for other URMs/minorities?

Re: URM OCI Thread
I think URMs should remember that you only get a boost during OCI if you are already at the grade point cutoff for a firm. The only way you are actually going to get a broader opportunity than your peers is to go to diversity fairs or network with diverse alum. There are many NBLSA job fairs that are happening in the next couple of weeks so check those out if you are in BLSA. There is also the Lavender Law career fair for LGBTQA students that I think is happening around August 21st. All URMs can go to general "minority" job fairs so take advantage of them if you can.Anonymous User wrote:I have seen many posts on TLS about receiving a boost at OCI if your AA. My advice is to hustle just as much as non-URMs. Aim for firms that will actually consider you in OCI based on your grades and w/e but you can aim higher during minority job fairs because you have nothing to lose! Good luck.

Re: URM OCI Thread
This can't be accurate. Based on my experience, it's much more school dependent. Being at a T14 earns you some pretty good leniency. A good number of my friends got V5 offers with median grades. Another batch all cracked DC with slightly below median grades. I think its fair to say that URMs can aim a tick or two higher than they otherwise would.3Lmao wrote:I think URMs should remember that you only get a boost during OCI if you are already at the grade point cutoff for a firm.

Re: URM OCI Thread
Yeah i would agree with this. School ranking always plays a large part in OCI. Being a URM at a T14 might open some doors that are usually closed to others with the same grade point average but it is definitely not something I would rely on. It's always good to aim high but keep realistic expectations.Anonymous User wrote:This can't be accurate. Based on my experience, it's much more school dependent. is it fair to say that URMs include blacks, hispanics, and native americans, and that non-URMS = asians?Anonymous User wrote:This can't be accurate. (as an aside I think only chinese and koreans should be considered non-URMS. SE asians and the rest are absolutely URMs.)

Re: URM OCI Thread
This got started in the URM forum, but should probably be continued here so there can anonymity. It's so hard to find past info on URM OCI performance, so hopefully we can get this thread going this year.

I think Hispanics get a negligible or no "boost." AA is a different story... I think firms are willing to ignore their cut off a lot more often simply because there are so few AA.
