Is a COA clerkship a prereq for appellate work?

I'm mainly talking about the more elite DC shops. Does it simply give you a leg up, or do you need one to do appellate work at places like Wilmer, GDC, Skadden, etc.

Not sure, but one way to answer your own question would be to look up the online profiles of the people working in those groups and see what their clerkship experience was.

Pretty sure it's a de facto requirement

I'm sure if you were a rock star with some idiosyncratic reason for not clerking you might have a shot. But realistically, it is a requirement. You're taking about some of the most prestigious, sought after legal positions anywhere. No reason for them to hire someone who either doesn't have the credentials to get a COA clerkship or isn't sufficiently interested in appellate work to do it.
