Do I have a chance at being an SA?

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Jul 26, 2014 1:59 pm

Do transfers have a chance at being an SA at a firm in a city where they have no ties to (and not NY or DC)?

I am a K-JD, transferring to a T-10, and hoping to get biglaw. I would like to work in NY, but seeing as I've already mass-mailed every firm in NY and DC, I am wondering whether I have a chance at a firm in a smaller market that I have no ties to.

Any advice or anecdotes would be appreciated.

Unlikely. Transferring to T14 opens up NYC mostly. It can't hurt to try though

yeah, no. just nyc, and even then there can be issues.

especially since transferring means you killed 1l, and that means you're probably awkward.

This is bullshit.

It's going to come done to a whole bunch of factors. Tell us where you came from, where you transferred to, and where you want to work for starters.

Most small markets do want ties, but if it's truly where you want to live you might be able to get that point across.

Is it a waste of time to mass-mail firms whose office is located in areas you have no ties to?

How would you even get a screener? Would they be willing to take the risk for a CB without ever meeting you?

I am trying to decide whether to mass-mail Texas or San Francisco firms, when I have never been to either place. I just want a job.

I've heard of firms doing Skype interviews or asking the candidate to interview with the office closest to them first (i.e., long screener in DC, where candidate lives, if DC people like her and passes on info to LA, then CB in LA).

The better question is whether lack of ties will get you there. From what I read here Texas and SF are pretty tie-conscious. But if it's mass mailing you have nothing to lose, so just do it.

I have done a few screeners via Skype albeit in markets where I have at least nominal ties. It is definitely possible. Perhaps ask for a Skype interview in your email?

I was a transfer to a T-10, landed biglaw at a firm in a city where I have no ties that was not NY or DC. You have a very high chance of getting biglaw. I have no idea what these assholes in this thread are basing their "no" on.

You're at a T10 and you transfer transcript is going to predict that you're near the top third of the class at your new school (it generally works that way). Just participate in your new school's OCI process. I got several dozen callback offers and ultimately landed a dozen callbacks of the 14 or so I did.

I've gotten mass-mail screeners (and a couple callbacks) in cities where I'd literally never been before (not NYC/DC). And no, I didn't make up ties in my cover letter or during the interview.
