Try including a middle initial or middle name; a number is also fine. Don't use "____jd."

Johnjaysmith@
Johnjsmith@
John.j.smith@
smithjohn@
Jsmith@
J.smith@
J.J.smith@

etc.

Your school really cancels your law email account? We get to keep ours, luckily. It seems like it would be a pain if people who had been emailing us for the past 3 years at our school email addresses couldn't email us there anymore.

Have you considered slightly less popular, but still respectable web mail accounts such as Outlook.com, where you might have better luck with variations of your name?

Or possibly purchasing your own domain and then selecting whatever user name you want?

Get an alumni email address from your law school's main university or from your undergrad. Most schools offer an alumni email forwarding service.

I had this problem with gmail, too, so I grabbed an outlook.com e-mail. I'm sure there are dozens of options out there.

Also, don't forget going F.Scott.Fitzgerald style. J.Jay.Smith@whatever.com.

And what about a college e-mail address? Did you have one of those? Was it taken away, too?

Someone told me once that periods in gmail addresses don't matter. (This seems to sort of confirm: http://lifehacker.com/269619/reformat-y ... -with-dots). Maybe not 100% relevant to this thread, but just in case.

This is true. Same with uppercase letters. I actually registered my email address with Google like John.A.Smith@gmail.com, but if you send it to johnasmith@gmail.com, I receive it as well.
