Re: law clerk at a big firm vs summer associate
I had the exact same type of opportunity as a 2L and took it as a worst case scenario. I ended up getting an SA offer elsewhere, but at the time it was my only glimmer of hope of employment after law school. Long story short, I actually got an offer to go back to that firm after graduation as an associate (with way under market salary because of the practice group). I didn't have to take it, but it would have been a decent "worst case scenario" given my 2L OCI disaster.
Just go and prove yourself. It could possibly lead to a full time job and it will get you biglaw-type experience. Just don't expect any other firms to be fooled by law clerk vs. SA come 3L year. They know the difference.
