Final Bid List Critique before deadline - Top Third at GULC

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jul 07, 2014 1:16 pm

**Note: Updated bid list down a few posts

Top Third at GULC, 3.49 GPA. Less than a year of work experience between ugrad and law school working in compliance for one of the Big Four accounting firms. Working for federal banking regulatory agency this summer. Looking to do corporate/capital markets work in NY, but I threw some DC firms on the list because it's the only other area I have ties to. Boston firms are only on there because they had very high bid/interview ratios, even though I know bidding that low is probably a waste anyway.

Concerned about maybe too many reaches and the placement of firms in the top 20 since, from what I've heard, that's basically as far down the list as you can get interviews from.

Quoted since it seems to be a thing for people to (selfishly) delete bidlists once they have feedback.

I think this is a horrible bidlist. Bid this way and be prepared to strike out, or hope you get a bunch of preselects (and since this is the first year for preselects, I can see OCS having a terrible system where those in the top 15% get almost all the preselects). You have way too many reaches, especially given that 200 other kids at Georgetown have GPAs just as good as yours. But some of this is understandable since the GPA data you have seems to be lower than I would have expected: the data from my year was dominated by the old curve and included 10 years of pre-2008 data, and it had significantly higher GPAs for the V10. Even with the relatively low GPA medians that OCS says reflect post-2008 hiring, your GPA is still low for about half of the lottery interviews you are likely to get: if you get eight interviews and four of them are Weil, Skadden, Latham, and Debevoise, how confident are you going to be?

Your DC bids are firmly in preselct-only territory, and I wouldn't expect to get any of them.

Are there that many reaches? I don't agree with moving skadden down. they're in high demand and i thought NY had like a 3.4 floor?

EDIT: not original anon.

OP here.

deadhead - are you basically suggesting I drop all but maybe one of Kirkland, Debe, Skadden, JD, and Latham from my top 20 and shift all the other firms up?

I cut out a bunch of DC firms because they are insanely overbid according to last year's bid stats and I thought they would be a waste of a bid down in the 30s. Still don't really know what to do with that area of the list. I currently filled it with NY firms that are near my GPA but that I'm less thrilled about their practice areas. Then I feel like the DC firms in the 40s are a waste but don't know what else to put there. V10 firms in the bottom 5 are simply as a hail mary hoping for pre-select for god knows what reason.
