k-JD - no accomplishments, nothing to talk about at OCI

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jul 07, 2014 1:39 am

As a K-JD, I have no accomplishments. I didn't join any clubs, organizations, or volunteer during UG.

During law school, I focused solely on my grades (which aren't even that great anyway).

Now I'm worried. The only thing I can talk about is my 1L summer job, which is mediocre.

I have no real accomplishments, nothing to talk about.
The greatest harm IMO is the fact that I can't show the interviewer certain qualities because I have no examples to back them up.

Anybody in the same situation before? How did you handle it?

Have confidence and make shit up. Your 1L job should become the most interesting thing you've ever done if you can tie those skills in any way to work at a big law firm.

This is a bad move and I cannot tell whether you are a cool person who did not care enough about stupid clubs, or you are too awkward/loner to even participate in clubs. If the former, work on your interest section and join some cool clubs/volunteer etc. If the second, you need to change that ASAP.

In my experience, just be able to spend fifteen minutes talking about sports and you'll be fine for most screeners

Danger Zone has the correct answer. No amount of cliché "purveyor of artisan cheese" under your interests section will make up for the inability to tie in your limited legal experience with the work of an SA.

Screeners are twenty minutes. Have some anecdotes locked and loaded if you need to do that.

Or, try to find out from upperclass friends who have summered at the same firm what your particular screen interviewer likes to do for hobbies. I found out from a friend that the screen interviewer was super into long-distance cycling. We talked about our road bikes and I asked him what kinds of routes he likes to do in the city where the firm is located. I got the callback like two hours later.

Doesn't matter. Just have some anecdotes/short stories to basic questions. Have a decent interests section and be ready to talk about them and tell stories. Repeat all this in every screener. Get animated. Very few people have any truly meaningful experience for biglaw. It's not at all required to get callbacks/offers. Just be an interested, engaged person.
