Any associates on here been successful developing a book of business? Is so any tips or guidance for a young lawyer just starting practice?

I could tell you exactly how to groom clients and make partner at my firm, or most of the firms in my market that have my practice area, but that isn't going to be helpful to you. You need to find a mentor in your own market who can give you the lay of the land.

No general advice? I mean I'm sure all your tips would not be applicable, but I'm sure if you have been successful that you have some tips pertaining to things that have worked for you and have not worked.

Where? What size firm? What practice areas / who are your clients? Lots of variables here. Representing people in divorces is a lot different than representing cities in litigation, and you don't build those books the same ways.

I think this a fair question for those not employed by a V100 firm. Make a friend at the chamber to see what new businesses are thinking about coming to your town. Join a country club or the COC. Get connected to the business world. Make it rain.

what about those with V100 firms? I still get the sense "making it rain" is very expected in order to make partner 7-9 years down the road. The only thing I've heard from current atty's is to basically either get lucky, or inherit a retiring partner's clients.
