Can you defer your offer?
Just wondering if you could defer your offer for 1 year?
Do firms do that for reasons beside clerkship or illness? If so, what reasons? (Would it be rude to even ask in the first place?)
If not (if you tell them that you would reapply next year) will they likely not reconsider you in the future ?
How does one go about doing this. Please help!

Why would you potentially place your career in jeopardy? What possible reason could you have for this

Oh so ... if I ask to join the firm next year instead, I am putting my career in jeopardy?Danger Zone wrote:Why would you potentially place your career in jeopardy? What possible reason could you have for this
Is it better than just decline the offer and reapply next year?
(Personal reason).

Would you be willing to tell your firm the personal reason? I'm sure they would be curious.

Besides clerkships and illness, I have a hard time imagining them seeing this positively. Even asking will probably mean a red flag.Anonymous User wrote:Just wondering if you could defer your offer for 1 year?

They are not a university; they are a firm who needs workers.

Re: Can you defer your offer?
1. This goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway: get your offer before you ask about deferring.
2. If you have a good reason, and if they like you, they will be willing to consider it. If it's a personal reason, you can ask that it not be disseminated, but you're going to need to explain it to someone - recruiting director or attorney mentor - so they can vouch for it being a good reason.
Firms don't love giving deferrals, but if they want you back and you have a good reason, they'll probably be willing to do it.

I'm trying to imagine a reason that would be valid enough to warrant asking....can't come up with one. Do share.

I know people who have deferred for a fellowship or whatever
Deferring because you want a year off, no

I don't understand this idea of just reapply next year.
