Are rising 3L's with a 95%+ offer rate mass mailing?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jul 01, 2014 4:32 am

If u have a SA with a lets say 95%+ offer rate are u mass mailing firms that u would only go to if u got no offered. So not really talking about random dude who wants to move up for prestige or anything. I'm talking, you are in a top law firm and mass mailing pretty obviously lower ranked firms just in case u somehow get no-offered. Just wondering what the move is here and when risk aversion + paranoia go too far. I sucked it up and threw some bids in for 3L OCI and I think I'll leave it at that since I'm pretty happy with my firm

No point mass-mailing unless you are (1) no-offered or (2) don't receive confirmation of your offer within the first week of August. I guess if you are really worried throw in OCI bids since you would have to do that now, but no real point in mass-mailing at this time.

Absolutely because of the situation described above. We won't know until "around Labor Day." I don't even know how that's possible.

My firm had a 98% offer rate when I summered there. I liked those odds, so I phoned it in on all my assignments, decided to work from home a few days a week, and didn't go to most of the social events.

I didn't get an offer -- what rotten luck! It was a one-in-fifty chance.

(Not OP) When does the 3L timeline begins for those of us that are more risk averse - 95% offer rate but still want to mass-mail to move up/change markets or simply hedge my bets. Should I mass-mail now? Or is the mass-mailing timeline for 3Ls later in the summer i.e. beginning of August when firms are more settled on their needs for the following year?

Not worth it. Firms hire slower for post grad than for 2L summer.

So when should a rising 3L (who has a 2L SA in his/her target market but is risk averse) start to mass mail?

Mass mailing before the end of the summer makes no sense. The majority of firms won't even know their own hiring needs before their summer programs end. So unless you're applying to smaller shops it's a waste of time.

Those who consider odds of their own failure solely in terms of statistical probability are going full retard.

You never go full retard.

He's (poorly) stating that a 95% offer rate isn't a random 95% chance at getting an offer. He's right, but that cuts both ways.

If people like you and you've gotten good reviews, well, you got above a 95% chance.

And if you got bad reviews, are a sperglord, or are a dick to pepole, we'll it's way lower than 95% chance.

i would guess less than half of the people who get no offered see it coming

His hypo is awful because it makes it seem as though people who receive no offers generally deserve them.

I have never heard about firm blowback because of mass mailing or slipping out for OCI if the candidate has not yet been offered. I’ve always believed it was wise to attend outside firm functions, even those golf/tennis/etc. outings.

I'm not sure we're gonna get much traction in here on this subject but I was wondering if anyone thinks it's a terrible idea to apply (as a 3L) to some NYC firms that I might want to work at in mid-July because I'm here for an SA until the end of August but won't be during law school.

I'm probably going to do it anyways because I've found firms are much more willing to interview me when they don't have to pay for it. But still curious what others think.

I'm doing the same thing, applying early so I can give them dates when I'll be in town. Although, as noted above, I don't think we'll get much without having offers in hand from this summer's firm and because they're still dealing with their own summer classes.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
