cover letter question

Post by timmyd » Sun Jun 29, 2014 11:29 am

Starting on cover letters for 3l oci. How should I handle recruiting directors with gender neutral names say that I cannot tell if I should address it to "Mr. Smith" or "Mrs./Ms. Smith"? Is it necessary that I include a greeting like that? Or can I just jump into the body of the letter?

I have still never encountered one whose gender I couldn't discover in 30 seconds of googling (LinkedIn photo, Facebook photo, article mentioning them by gender pronoun, whatever). If I ever weren't able to find it I would probably just address them by their full name (Dear Jesse Smith) or just the first name (Dear Jesse). Or just call the firm and ask anonymously.

Sometimes NALP has them listed as "Mrs. X." I assume if they specifically post it that way, that's how they want to be addressed.

There are plenty of shitboomer women who rage hard about the Mrs. and plenty of subcultures (especially in the south) where there's antipathy toward Ms. as an evil/PC feminist ploy. Granted, most of these women are SAHMs and therefore likely not working for law firms, but I shit you not this a real thing they teach their children.
