Firm reception experience
Went to one of the V10 receptions last week and had an interesting experience with a few partners. not sure if it was a good sign and if so, how to use it to my advantage.
The event was pretty much over and I felt like it was time to leave. As i was walking out, a partner came running up (literally running) and caught me as I was walking into the elevator; mentioned he was looking for me during the whole event hoping he would have a time to talk. Said he saw my resume (school sent it over when the firm spoke to the Career office on students in the city) and wanted to talk about some of the stuff on my resume, summer job, me, etc. We chatted for a bit and then they invited me out to drinks with another partner, some associates, and some summers. continued chatting and ended up out with them till 2 am at a few bars and grabbed dinner on the firm.
Thing is, this is a V10, my grades are at median, if not slightly above (GPA was on resume), and i'm below the "cutoff" they put online for my school (T20). So - were his actions really nothing or can i play this into something more? I guess, what's the best strategy for playing out this as i go through OCI and getting into an interview. Any way I can try to move this into an interview before OCI?

Email him a thank you note, mention how great it was speaking to him and the other lawyers from his firm and that you appreciated them taking you out. I'd probably throw it a comment about how it cemented your belief that XX firm would be a great place to start your career and you look forward to interviewing with them for a summer position.Anonymous User wrote:Went to one of the V10 receptions last week and had an interesting experience with a few partners. not sure if it was a good sign and if so, how to use it to my advantage.

He could respond with a "ok see you during OCI" or he could ask if you want to come in for an early call-back. Either way it's a good situation to be in.

Seems to me there's at least one missing piece to this story. How did this partner know that the particular resume he was supposedly intrigued by belonged to the person getting onto the elevator? Did the resume have a picture of yourself on it? But yes, you should definitely parlay this with a follow-up email. Is there something particularly unique about your resume that would have made it jump out?

He saw my name tag b/c i walked right by him as i was leaving - sorry to spoil your fun, but not one of those people to submit a headshot with my materials (i know someone who did and he remains jobless).
I do have some interesting experiences but rather not say as of yet, just in case they read this stuff.

Pretty sure you already outed yourself since having a firm partner run after you is definitely not a normal experience. With that said I could only read into this as a positive experience. Does he have any personal connection with you anything on your resume? Either way it definitely sounds like you have passed the fit portion of hiring and may have someone willing to go to bat for if if the firm is willing to overlook your grades.Anonymous User wrote:Luein wrote:Seems to me there's at least one missing piece to this story. Re: Firm reception experience
I had something similar happen when I was summering at one firm with a partner at a different firm. No running was involved, but I was at a bar when he approached me and struck up a conversation. Like you, I had a rare thing on my resume, and he was aware of me through a mutual acquaintance who worked at my summer firm. I'm not exactly sure how he identified me, but I have a few ideas that I won't list because anon -- and aren't really important anyway. Anyway, the next thing you know, he and his wife were in my group of six. We closed the bars down and after-partied at my apartment until 4 in the morning.
We kept in touch on email and met up for dinner a week later where he more or less offered me a job, but I had already decided to accept at another firm. I recommended a friend instead, who went straight to the callback phase and ended up getting an SA and then the job.
My instinct is that you're in. Just don't be weird (e.g. overly formal or overly informal) in the email. Something like, "Hello John, I had a good time with you and the group of attorneys from your firm last Friday. (insert something brief about the conversation or experience). I wanted to let you know that I am heading into the interview process with law firms soon. I would be interested in any opportunities you may have at XYZ firm..."
