3L OCI mass mail?
Any point to mass mail if you strike out of 2L OCI since 3L OCI does not exist

It is precisely because 3l oci doesn't exist that you must mass mail.

What do you guys write in your cover letter? Do we apply for a summer associate position? If so, when do we study for the bar. Any insights or should I just say I want an entry level position that starts in the Fall.

Apply for an associate position beginning of August. Got movement last year from Skadden, Paul Weiss, Simpson, Cravath, Davis Polk. If you know anyone at these firms, it pays to network. Full disclosure: did not get an offer from any of these places, but landed interviews.Jchance wrote:No, you apply for an associate position.

Also, it is very very helpful if you can get inside info on what practice group is hiring and then apply to that specific practice group.

How would one discern what practice group is hiring short of having a connect? My résumé screams lit so I'm just going to roll the dice and hope lit is hiring...

Ok, question for the experts. Do you ask them to interview you when they come on campus even though they not even interviewing 3ls but only 2ls? Or do you straight up ask for an interview. Just wondering how the process usually works.

Also interested in this. My career services said that it's basically useless to mass mail a firm coming to campus for 2L oci. The theory is that if there was any 3L hiring, they would set aside interview slots while visiting campus. Basically, I was encouraged to mass mail, beginning mid-July, outside of my target market. Is this sound advice?Anonymous User wrote:Ok, question for the experts. Do you ask them to interview you when they come on campus even though they not even interviewing 3ls but only 2ls? Depends on whether your school uses a lottery or not. For lottery-based schools, 3L OCI is going to be dominated by all those who didn't get a 2L SA and are hoping to pick something up. In other words, the sort of people that firms aren't exactly looking to hire. In this situation, they will fit in attractive candidates when they are on campus. Mass mailing allows them to pre-select you.Anonymous User wrote: Also interested in this. My career services said that it's basically useless to mass mail a firm coming to campus for 2L oci. For OP, this probably isn't great news. For those looking to change firms, it's better news.

My school uses a partial lottery. I am also an "unattractive candidate." No SA, but I did raise my grades a lot during 2L. So it isn't worth mass mailing a firm coming to campus for 2Ls but not interviewing any 3Ls?dead head wrote:Depends on whether your school uses a lottery or not. If they don't interview any 3Ls at all, then you're chances are very slim, but you aren't going to lose anything by mailing them. I would especially target any of the secondary markets you have ties to and any midlaw firms that come, as they may be more flexible if you go to a good school. Just don't expect anything, and don't let it interfere with more realistic job search plans.Anonymous User wrote: My school uses a partial lottery. I am also an "unattractive candidate." Re: 3L OCI mass mail?
Question for those who might have experience; as a rising 3L, I presumably have an offer from a V100 - T14 top 1/3 however I might have to switch markets for personal reasons. I assume, since OCI is virtually nonexistent for 3Ls, I should mass mail.
When should I start sending (should I wait for offer in hand ~August or start sending now) and should I also attend the 2L OCI and visit each of the hospitality rooms? Also, do I send to hiring partners and copy attorneys I know or do I send directly to contacts?

Re: 3L OCI mass mail?
What's the procedure if I have a 2L SA in my target market, but won't know about offers until after OCI has already started? I'm bidding for 3L OCI, of course (though it's slim pickings). Should I mass mail too? I'm already in my target market, and I don't want to offend my firm in case they find out about my sending resumes to other firms in the market. But since I won't know about offers until mid-August, I don't want to miss the boat on mass mailing either in case I don't get an offer. What's the right play here?
Edited to add: depending on the year, 2L firm's offer rate is about 85-100% firm-wide.
